Open Farm


First things first.  Open farm this  Saturday, May 25th,   11-1.

Vegetables, herbs and seedlings for shareholders.

The kale and Swiss chard is ready to be taken home.  There are also plenty of herbs, various mustards, several salad greens  (the hoophouse lettuces are almost gone.  The next lettuce will be going out with the share deliveries in June).  This will  also be the last week to pick your own asparagus.

Seedling give away.  We still have several thousand extra seedlings.  I'll be  putting out several flats each of a dozen different heirloom tomatoes for shareholders,  plus peppers, eggplants and all of the standard herbs.  Plus there will be a couple dozen other types of vegetable seedlings.


This last week we have been planting as quickly as the weather

We've put over a thousand tomato plants in the ground as well as  almost 3000 sweet potato roots.  Then tens of thousands of radish seeds.

I lost tract on how many peppers , thousands of Italian and Thai basil plants, tomatillos, summer squash, cucumbers, winter squash (yes we are planning on giving out some acorn, spaghetti  and in late August as well as our major winter squash crop in October).  We also planted zinnias and sunflowers for shareholders to pick their own later this summer.

Add to that all the things we've planted since the middle of April -- three or four weeks worth of pac choi  plus plenty of broccoli and cauliflower, cabbage, Brussel sprouts, Romanesque broccoli, fennel, kohlrabi, half a dozen varieties of lettuce  and I could go on and on and on.  This year's onions look better than they every have  (just as long as we keep them weeded). Plus we really a large crop of garlic and on top of that the new anti-deer fence we put up last year is really working.  So far no deer eating our vegetables  (knock on wood).

Then there are all the crops we have growing in doors  -- I mean inside the hoophouses. one house is full of bell peppers, another has hot peppers, the third one eggplant, and the fourth one is full of cucumber vines.  Plus we're experimenting with the 200 by 17 house and have okra growing from one end to the other. And I didn't mention the 300 tomato plants growing where the lettuce was.

I was going to put pictures of everything on our blog but there's been some difficulty getting things to save with blogspot.  I'll give it another try tomorrow so you can get some images of what we are growing.
